Design System Generator and Atomic alternatives for Figma (2026)
Design System Generator and Atomic haven't shipped a described change since 2024. What they do, what a token-first generator adds, and how to move an existing file over.
If you used Design System Generator or Atomic and want something actively maintained, the closest replacements depend on what you used them for. For buttons and a small component sheet, look at a generator that also makes components, such as Huekit or Figr Identity. For the color system, Kigen, Foundation Studio and Semantix go further than either older plugin: they set up role-based color tokens on top of the palette, with a dark theme as a second variable mode.
Both plugins still install and run as far as their listings say. The reason to look around is age. Both Community listings carry the same November 26, 2024 update date, and neither release log describes a change after mid-2024.
What the two plugins actually do
Numbers and features are from each plugin's Figma Community listing, checked October 25, 2026.
Design System Generator (21,134 users) does two things:
- A color system from a base color, with a set number of complementary colors and a choice of light or dark, created as color variables. The listing compares the result to Tailwind's palette.
- A button set: 48 variants from three sizes, four types (
primary, secondary, text, elevated) and four states (enabled, hovered, pressed, disabled), with radius, font and padding settings. The buttons are linked to the color variables, and you can export React and CSS for them.
Its release log ends with a July 2024 update that made the color system generator the default view.
Atomic (17,572 users) by Subframe calls itself an early beta. Press Generate and it creates a minimal set: icons (from Feather Icons), buttons, icon buttons, badges and alerts. The listing points to Subframe for the fuller toolset, and its last release note, from June 2024, reads "copy changes".
So the two are component-first. Neither describes a semantic token layer, Light and Dark modes as variable modes, typography tokens or a documentation page.
What changes if you switch to a token-first generator
A token-first generator builds the layer underneath components:
| Design System Generator | Atomic | Token-first generators | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Color variables | Yes | Not described | Yes |
| Semantic layer aliased to primitives | No | No | Yes |
| Light and Dark as variable modes | Not described | No | Yes |
| Typography and spacing tokens | Font choice for buttons | No | Yes |
| Components | 48 button variants | Icons, buttons, badges, alerts | Varies; see below |
| Code output | React and CSS for buttons | Via Subframe | Token export (varies) |
| Last listing update | Nov 2024 | Nov 2024 | 2025 to 2026 |
The practical difference: with semantic variables underneath, a button's background is action/primary, not a specific blue. Dark mode, a rebrand or a second product theme then changes one alias instead of every component. Our primitive vs semantic tokens explainer goes into why that matters.
The alternatives
If you mostly used the buttons and components
Huekit is our plugin, so weigh this accordingly. Alongside the token layer, we generate a components page with buttons, inputs, checkboxes, radios, toggles, cards, badges, alerts, avatars, progress bars and sliders, built as variants, plus documentation pages. The palette can start from your own brand colors, one of our presets or a code editor theme, and every color token gets a Light and a Dark value. See huekit.io for what each plan includes.
Figr Identity describes a library of more than 80 components with tokens and documentation, which is the biggest component set here. The catch: Figr now steers people to its web product, Figr AI, and the listing warns that Figma API changes can break parts of the plugin. We covered that in our Figr Identity alternatives article.
If all you need is one well-built button set, you may not need a plugin. Figma's variants work on every plan, and a 3 by 4 by 4 button set is a manageable job once your color variables exist.
If you mostly used the color system
Kigen (38,073 users, updated October 2026) generates color variables from presets such as Tailwind, Material, Radix and Carbon, with Light and Dark modes, semantic status colors, typography and size variables, and documentation. The listing describes the plugin as free right now, but a release note from June 2026 adds a monthly option, so read the current terms before you commit. Components are listed as coming soon.
Foundation Studio (2,101 users, beta) starts from a single primary color (secondary and tertiary are optional) and adds type, spacing, shadow and radius scales and a documentation page. It's the closest in spirit to Design System Generator's "start from one color" approach.
Semantix (274 users) builds the most structured system: primitive palettes mapped to more than 200 semantic tokens, plus typography, spacing, borders, elevation and a breakpoint grid. Its listing notes that dark mode needs Figma Professional or higher, which matches Figma's Modes for variables page.
Supa Design Tokens (6,107 users) offers the most control over palette generation, with semantic colors mapped per mode. Its store prices it at $90 to $650, paid once, and there's a trial.
Moving an existing file over
If your file already has Design System Generator buttons or Atomic components in it, you don't have to throw them away.
- Run the new generator on a copy of your file, so you can compare before anything changes.
- Map the old colors. Design System Generator's buttons use its own color variables. In the new semantic collection, find the matching roles (
action/primary,action/secondary,text/on-action). - Rebind the main components. Open the button component set and swap each fill and text color from the old variables to the semantic ones. Instances follow the main component, so screens update without touching them one by one.
- Delete the old color variables last, once nothing uses them. Figma's help center notes that deleting a collection disconnects every property that was using its variables, so check first.
- Keep or replace the components depending on how well they fit. Atomic's set is small enough to rebuild quickly in your own style; Design System Generator's 48 buttons are fine to keep if you like them.
FAQ
Is Design System Generator still maintained?
Its listing was last updated on November 26, 2024, and its last described feature change was in July 2024. It may still work, but expect no new features.
What is a good alternative to Atomic by Subframe?
For components inside Figma, a generator that builds a components page on top of tokens, such as Huekit, or Figr Identity if you're fine with its web app. For only the icons, buttons and badges Atomic made, building them yourself with variants is often quicker.
Is there a free design system generator for Figma?
Kigen describes itself as free at the moment, and Foundation Studio and Semantix show no paid tier on their listings. Check each listing before you plan around it.
Can I keep my Design System Generator buttons and add variables later?
Yes. Create the semantic variables, then rebind the button component's fills and text colors to them. Instances update automatically.
Next step
Open the file where you used either plugin, select one button instance, and look at what its fill is bound to. If it's a fixed color or a plugin-made variable, try one of the token-first generators above on a copy and rebind just that button. You'll know within ten minutes whether the switch is worth it.
