Figma variables vs Tokens Studio in 2026: which to use
Figma variables vs Tokens Studio, updated for 2026: token types, math, composite tokens, modes and themes, Git sync, import and export, plan limits and pricing.
Use Figma variables when your tokens are colors, numbers, strings and booleans that switch by mode, and someone can move a JSON file to the codebase by hand. Use Tokens Studio when you need what variables still don't do: math in token values, composite tokens like full typography or shadows, and a direct sync with a Git repository. Many teams end up using both, with Tokens Studio as the source and variables as what designers actually apply.
Some of the comparisons that rank for this, like Rangle's July 2023 post, were written soon after variables launched, before Figma added JSON import and export. Here is how the two compare as of October 2026, with links to each tool's own docs.
The short comparison
| Figma variables | Tokens Studio for Figma | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Built into Figma | Plugin, open source |
| Value types | Six: color, number, string, boolean, timing, easing | 23 token types, per its docs |
| References | Alias to a variable of the same type | References between any tokens |
| Math in values | Not described in Figma's docs | Yes, e.g. {fontSizeBase} * 1.618 |
| Composite tokens | No; styles hold composites | Typography, shadow and border composites |
| Themes | Modes, switched per frame or page | Themes; one collection with modes needs the paid features |
| Plan limits | Modes on Professional (10 per collection), Organization (20), Enterprise (unlimited with extended collections); none on Starter | Plugin installs without paying; Team plan for paid features |
| Code handoff | JSON import and export per mode, code syntax per variable | Git sync (GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Azure DevOps) and other providers |
| API | REST API for variables on Enterprise | Tokens live in your repo or a sync provider |
| Pricing (as published) | Part of your Figma plan | Team €39/month billed annually |

What Figma variables do well now
They're where designers already work. Variables live in the Variables tab, show up in the fill and number pickers, and switch with Apply variable mode on a frame, page, section or component. No plugin has to be open.
Scopes and code syntax. You can limit a number variable to corner radius only, or hide primitives from the color picker, using scopes (Figma). Each variable can also carry a code syntax name, so developers see the token name they use in code.
JSON in and out. Figma's help center documents importing a JSON token file into a collection (one mode per file) and exporting a mode, or every mode in a collection, as JSON. That covers the "send the developer a file" workflow that used to need a plugin. Import has limits worth knowing: dimension values must be in px, font family tokens must be a single name, and a token is skipped unless it appears in every imported file with the same type.
Scale. A collection can hold up to 5,000 variables.
What they don't do: Figma's docs describe a variable's value as a raw value or an alias, with no formulas. There are no composite variables; for a full text style or a shadow, you use a style, and Figma notes that styles can't be used inside other styles or variables. And there's no Git connection; the REST API for variables is listed only for Enterprise.
What Tokens Studio still does better
Math. Its listing shows token values written as formulas, so a type scale or spacing scale can be derived from one base value. Change the base and every step recalculates.
Composite tokens. Typography, shadows and borders are single tokens with several properties. That's closer to how many codebases define them.
Git as the source of truth. Tokens Studio's docs list sync providers including GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps, plus cloud and URL options. With the paid features you also get multi-file sync and a branch switcher, so token changes can go through pull requests like code. Tokens Studio's pricing page puts direct Git sync among the paid plugin features included in Team.
More token types. Its docs list 23 token types against Figma's six variable types, including asset, gradient and composite types.
Maturity. On October 25, 2026 its Figma listing counted 372,251 users, and the code is open source, so most problems you'll hit have a forum thread already.
Using both together
This is the setup a lot of larger teams settle on. Tokens Studio holds the tokens (often in Git), and exports them to Figma variables and styles so designers use native pickers.
A few things from Tokens Studio's variables docs to plan around:
- To get one collection with several modes, export from Themes, which is a paid feature. Exporting from token sets creates separate collections instead.
- Once themes are attached to a collection, switch modes with Figma's native mode switching; the plugin's theme switcher stops applying to it.
- The plugin can't set Figma's scopes or hide variables from publishing. Do that in the Variables tab afterwards; Tokens Studio says this doesn't break the link to your tokens.
- Some tokens won't become variables, because there are far more token types than variable types. Typography and shadow tokens can become styles instead.
The risk of the combined setup is two places to edit. Agree on a rule early: tokens change in Tokens Studio (or the repo), never directly in the Variables tab, apart from scopes and publishing settings.
Which one should you use?
Figma variables alone if:
- your tokens are mostly colors and a spacing scale,
- you're on a Figma plan with modes (or don't need a second theme yet),
- and a developer can take an exported JSON file into the build by hand.
Tokens Studio, alone or on top of variables, if:
- tokens already live in a repo and changes need review,
- you derive scales with math or rely on composite typography and shadow tokens,
- or several files and brands share one token source.
If you're only here because Tokens Studio's pricing changed and you want to stay on a zero budget, we compared the free Tokens Studio alternatives separately.
Where a generator fits
Neither tool decides your palette or builds the first structure for you. That's the job of a generator plugin: it creates primitives, an aliased semantic layer and Light and Dark modes as Figma variables, which you then manage natively or bring into Tokens Studio. Kigen does this, and its listing says everything in it is currently free. Huekit, our plugin, covers the same step (your colors, a preset or an editor theme go in; variables and modes come out), and we export the result as JSON or a Tailwind config. See huekit.io for details.
FAQ
Can Figma variables replace Tokens Studio?
Often, yes, if your team is small. Variables cover colors, numbers, strings and booleans with aliases, modes, scopes and JSON import and export. They don't cover token math, composite tokens or Git sync, so teams that depend on those still need Tokens Studio.
Does Tokens Studio work with Figma variables?
Yes. It can create variables and styles from your tokens and import existing variables as tokens. Exporting themes as one collection with modes needs its paid features.
Can Figma variables do math?
Not in variable values. Figma's docs describe a variable's value as a raw value or an alias; Figma's expressions apply to prototype logic, not to the values in the Variables tab. Tokens Studio supports formulas in token values.
Do Figma variables support typography or shadow tokens?
Not as single variables. You can use number and string variables for individual properties like font size or font family, and combine them in a text style or effect style.
Is Tokens Studio free?
The plugin installs without paying. Paid plugin features such as direct Git sync, themes and multi-file sync are part of the Team plan, listed at €39 a month billed annually.
Do Figma variables need a paid plan?
Not for variables themselves. Figma lists modes on Education, Professional, Organization and Enterprise plans, so a second theme column needs one of those.
Next step
Write down which of these you actually used in the last month: math, composite tokens, Git sync. If the answer is none, build your next collection natively and export it as JSON. If it's any of them, keep Tokens Studio as the source and let it write the variables.
