Best Figma plugins to generate a design system (2026 data)

Nine Figma design system generator plugins compared on users, last update, variables, Light/Dark modes, semantic tokens, components and pricing, as of October 2026.

The best Figma plugin to create a design system depends on what you want out of it. For variables with Light and Dark modes and a semantic layer at no cost, Kigen is the most used option that's still updated. For the deepest token architecture, look at Semantix or Supa Design Tokens. For ready-made components, Figr Identity and Atomic go further, but both point new work to their web products now. Huekit, our plugin, sits in the variables-first group.

The numbers below come from each plugin's Figma Community listing on October 25, 2026. I read every listing and release log; I didn't rank them by a score, because the right pick changes with the job.

Users are Figma's run counts for each listing. Feature cells summarize each plugin's own listing description and release notes. We don't quote Huekit's own user count here; the listing shows it.

UX Pilot is in the table because it's the plugin people often find first when they search for this, but it's a different kind of tool: it generates UI screens and can work from your components and tokens. It doesn't build the token system for you.

How to read "last updated"

A date alone can mislead. Design System Generator and Atomic both show November 26, 2024, but their release notes tell more. Design System Generator's last described change was in July 2024 (the color system generator). Atomic's last note, from June 2024, says "copy changes", and its description calls it an early beta and points to Subframe for the full toolset. Neither is broken as far as the listings say, but I wouldn't build a new system on either without testing it on a copy first.

Figr Identity is a different case. It's the most used plugin in this group and was updated in August 2026, but its listing says the design system experience moved to the Figr AI web app and that "some features of the plug-in may not work properly" because of Figma API changes. If you're coming from Figr, we wrote up the Figr Identity alternatives in detail.

The plugins, one by one

Kigen: the most used free option that's still updated

Kigen generates color variables and styles from presets drawn from Tailwind, Material, Fluent, Radix, Atlassian, Polaris, Carbon, Bootstrap and others. It added Light and Dark modes in September 2025, and it also creates semantic colors (success, error, warning, info), typography tokens, size and spacing variables, and documentation. Export to CSS, JS and JSON arrived in June 2025.

Its listing says everything is free for now, and that early users who claim a Pro license keep it. A June 2026 release note mentions a monthly option, so check the Kigen site before you plan around it. Components are listed as coming soon.

Pick it if you want a working variables setup today, on any budget, from a well-known palette.

Semantix: the largest semantic layer

Semantix builds primitives for brand, neutral and feedback colors and maps them to more than 200 semantic tokens, with an optional dark mode. It goes beyond color: typography as text styles and variables, a spacing scale with semantic aliases, borders, elevation as effect styles, and a grid system that uses one variable mode per breakpoint. Each module adds an annotated spec sheet to the canvas. The listing says dark mode on colors needs a Figma Professional plan or above, which matches Figma's own Modes for variables page.

Pick it if you want a strict primitive to semantic structure across every token type, and you're fine with a new plugin that has a small user base so far.

Supa Design Tokens: the most control over color

Supa generates color (with OKLCH and P3 support), typography with modular scales, effects, dimensions and layout tokens, and syncs them as variables and styles. A July 2025 update added semantic colors mapped for Light and Dark with manual overrides. It starts from libraries such as Tailwind and Material UI, can import existing tokens, and lists CSS, Tailwind and JSON among its export targets. The store lists a one-time license from $90 to $650, and the Supa site offers a one-week trial without a card.

Pick it if you manage a large token set and want fine control over palette generation, and a one-time license fits your budget.

Foundation Studio: quick foundations from one color

Foundation Studio builds a palette from a single primary color (with optional secondary and tertiary colors), semantic and text colors, a type system with font pairing, and spacing, shadow and radius scales, plus a documentation page. Light and dark themes come from the same tokens. A December 2025 update added support for free Figma accounts. It's labeled beta.

Pick it if you're starting a small project and want a clean base in a few minutes.

Figr Identity: components, if the plugin still works for you

Figr's listing still describes tokens for seven areas (from color and type to effects and grid), a library of more than 80 components, documentation and an AI option for a starting visual language. New work goes to the Figr AI web app, where the free tier includes 10 credits a month and the cheapest paid tier is $32 a month on yearly billing.

Pick it if you want components generated along with tokens and you're happy to work in Figr's web app.

Design System Generator and Atomic: components, not tokens

Design System Generator creates a color system with variables and 48 button variants (three sizes, four types, four states) and can export React and CSS code for those buttons. Atomic generates a minimal component set: icons, buttons, icon buttons, badges and alerts. Neither builds a semantic token layer.

Pick them if you need a quick button set or a starter component sheet, and you've checked them on a test file.

Where Huekit fits

Huekit is ours, so treat this section as the maker's description. We built it for people who want the variables layer done properly inside Figma, and it sits closest to Kigen and Supa in this list:

  • Where the palette comes from: your own brand colors, a preset such as Tailwind, Radix, Material or IBM Carbon, or a code editor theme like Dracula or Catppuccin.
  • What lands in the file: color variables with a Light and a Dark mode, a semantic layer aliased to those colors, and foundations (spacing, radius, sizes, typography).
  • Extras: generated documentation pages and a components page.
  • Older files: our plugin can work from the document you already have, and its Audit & Repair step shows you hard-coded values before binding them to tokens.
  • Handoff: JSON or a Tailwind config.

What it doesn't do: generate whole screens like UX Pilot, or give you the per-module spec sheets Semantix produces. See huekit.io for what each plan includes.

How to choose in five minutes

  1. Decide whether you need tokens or screens. If screens, UX Pilot or Figr's web app. If tokens, keep reading.
  2. Check your Figma plan. Light and Dark modes need Education, Professional, Organization or Enterprise, per Figma's help center. On Starter, a generator can still build single-mode variables.
  3. Run two candidates on a blank copy. Open the Variables tab afterwards and check three things: are primitives and semantic tokens in separate collections, does every semantic cell alias a primitive, and are the modes only on the semantic collection? Our guide to setting up variable modes explains why those three matter.
  4. Check the export your developers need before you commit.

FAQ

What is the best free Figma plugin to create a design system?

Kigen, based on its listing as of October 2026: it says everything is currently free, it's updated regularly, and it builds variables with Light and Dark modes and semantic colors. Neither Foundation Studio nor Semantix shows a paid tier on its listing.

Is there an AI design system generator for Figma?

Yes. Figr Identity's listing describes an AI option for a starting visual language, though new work has moved to the Figr AI web app. UX Pilot uses AI to generate screens from your existing design system rather than building tokens.

Which plugins create Figma variables with light and dark modes?

Kigen, Semantix, Supa Design Tokens, Foundation Studio and Huekit all describe Light and Dark modes on their listings. Your Figma plan must allow modes for the second column to exist.

Are Design System Generator and Atomic still maintained?

Their listings were last updated on November 26, 2024, and their last described changes date from mid-2024. Test them on a copy before relying on them.

Do I need a generator at all?

Not always. You can build collections, aliases and modes by hand in the Variables tab. A generator saves the setup time and gives you a consistent starting structure, which you then edit.

Your next step

Pick the two rows from the table that match your job and run both on a blank copy of your file this week. Compare the Variables tab side by side, not the marketing screenshots. If Huekit is one of the two, you can install it from the Figma Community.
